I am not yet certain if the prophecy in Jeremiah 49:35 refers to the seven years of the Great Tribulation or to the period of time near its beginning. In this last case it could be that the destruction of Elam, in a radioactive cloud, could be a sign to warn at the last moment the lost souls, that the time to be saved with the blood of Christ is expiring and the age of grace aka church age is nearly off.
Indeed the classical "covenant theology" poison from Calvinism, that "faith-alone-salvation-through-all-the-bible" which polluted many denominations especially the Baptist ones, is blinding the eyes of the ones who believe to read the Bible (AV 1611) but are only dreaming their dream on it.
When God takes the church away from earth it means that the church age or the age of GRACE-alone-salvation is ended and begins the FAITH & WORKS salvation age of the wrath of God. You have to very hardly work out your salvation. You have NOT to take the mark of the Beast and this implies a LOT of works.... Covenanters, even if anti-Calvinists, insists with the silly game of declaring that "after born again a saint will have the Spirit stenghtening him in order to refuse the mark".
See? Isn't this a contradiction? First they say that Eternal Security seals you to heaven, no matter how much you sin after being born again. BUT then they contradict themselves and says that there's a sin you will never do. Does it mean that if you have to avoid that sin absolutely, it is a sin that can ruin your eternal security?.... I could care the less if I am helped by the Spirit to refuse the mark....the only thing I see is that God CANNOT assure your salvation if you do that sin, and in order to save you He have to stop you from doing that particular sin.... It is interesting that also the free-willers, accepting this absurd doctrine, become crypto-predestinationists: the believer is COMPELLED to do something by God, even against his will.... even if he is starving to death and wish to eat accepting the mark of the beast, and this he wants with his whole will, no, God doesn't allow him, and the Spirit in him (we assume like them that he is a born again Christian) prevent him from accepting the mark.... (historical context is the near future, the seven years of Tribulation with the Beast).
All this comes from the blind reading of James chapter 2.... Catholic interpretation is the mainstream among 99% of Christianity.... The solution: James 2 is referred to the Tribulation period, ANOTHER dispensation, not for our church age.
But let's forget these considerations, and see how Jeremiah 49. is very friendly with contemporary events in the Middle East:

Missiles cloud Mideast skies over the Persian Gulf. Iran shuts down the Strait of Hormuz. Arab oil is choked off to world markets. Hezbollah and Hamas launch scores of missiles into Israel. Terror cells initiate cycles of violence in America. Global economies begin to collapse.
Radioactivity permeates the skies over Bushehr’s nuclear reactor. Countless Iranian’s hastily seek refuge into neighboring nations. The Arabian Gulf becomes a cesspool of contamination. Desalinization plants can’t process the polluted waters. A humanitarian crisis burgeons out of control. A disaster of epic biblical proportion has finally arrived in the Middle East!
About 2600 years ago the Hebrew prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel issued parallel end times prophecies concerning modern-day Iran. Today the rogue country is becoming a nuclear nation and aggressively advancing its hegemony throughout the greater Middle East.

The Destruction of Iran: Jeremiah 49
“Behold, I will break
the bow of Elam, the chief of their might” (Jeremiah 49:35)
There is another prophecy concerning Iran that possibly precedes the Gog and Magog scenario outlined by Ezekiel. In Jeremiah 49:34-39, we are told that Elam will come under the judgement of God for conspiring to launch an attack against Israel in the “latter days”. Modern day Iran is comprised of ancient Elam (about one-tenth) and Persia. This prophecy concerning Iran has not yet been fulfilled but seems to align with Iran’s current nuclear aspirations! Let's see the prophecy in Jeremiah 49:35-39...
35 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.
Jeremiah predicts that Elam will be struck at the foremost place of its strength. Today, this could infer an attack upon Iran's growing nuclear program. One of Iran’s most strategic and vulnerable nuclear targets is the Bushehr nuclear reactor, located in the heart of ancient Elam (see map on right).
Jeremiah also predicts that Iran will suffer the fate of a broken bow. When your bow is broken, you cannot load the arrows from out of your quiver, or in a modern sense, the missiles out of your silo. This might imply that the IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps) will be unable to launch scores of its missiles (arrows in modern warfare are missiles) at its enemies.
36 And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.

Well, I don't know for sure. It can happen in the last days of the church age, or in the Tribulation.
